Maintaining a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles

Maintaining a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles is what we hope everyone of our patients would pledge to themselves. A healthy looking smile is one of your best features, so it’s important that you take good care of it. Everyday life can be hard on your teeth, since they’re regularly being exposed to things that erode, stain and otherwise damage them. Furthermore, many lifestyle habits are also associated with dental issues, most of which are avoidable with the proper care. Dr. Nada Albatish wants you to know these tips for maintaining a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Brush and Floss Regularly

At least once per day, but preferably after each meal or snack, it’s recommended that you brush and floss your teeth. Food residues that are allowed to sit on your teeth will weaken the enamel, making cavities and tooth decay more likely. By brushing and flossing, you remove these food residues and keep them from staying on your teeth longer than necessary. However, it’s important to note that you should wait at least 30 minutes between eating and brushing. The tooth enamel is still vulnerable from eating, and brushing right away can hurt rather than help.

Be Familiar With Your Teeth

By fostering a familiarity with your teeth and how they normally look and feel, you can often catch problems right as they start. When one or more teeth begin showing noticeable changes in color, texture, shape and sensitivity, you’ll know to make an appointment with your dentist.

Regular Checkups

Regular dentist checkups are a key part of maintaining good oral health. A Newmarket dentist will be able to take a better look at your teeth, provide cleaning services, repair cavities or fix chipped teeth. In addition, your dentist is a great source of information and recommendations for avoiding tooth problems and treating any you may already have.

Limit Sugar Consumption

Sugar is one of the worst things you can eat, both for your body and your teeth. The naturally occurring bacteria living in your mouth eagerly consume the sugar residues. As they do this, they produce acidic substances as a metabolic by-product. These acids wear down tooth enamel, leaving them open for cavities and decay.

Avoid Problem Foods

If you’re a fan of pearly white teeth, then there are certain foods you should avoid since they cause stains. Things like coffee, tea, berries, cola, fruit drinks and red wine are among the worst offenders. With regular consumption, they can turn teeth an unsightly shade of brown. You may also wish to avoid foods and drinks like lemonade, vinegar and citrus juice, which are all very acidic. If you like eating or drinking these things, your dentist may recommend a fluoride treatment and whitening session to negate the effects.

Give Teeth What They Need

Try adding more foods to your diet that are rich in magnesium, phosphorus and calcium. Teeth rely on these building blocks to maintain themselves and fortify the protective enamel coating. A diet low in these minerals can cause teeth to weaken and decay, so it’s important to ensure you’re getting enough.
